Tara Raghuveer is the Homes Guarantee campaign director and the director of KC Tenants, the citywide tenant union in Kansas City, Missouri. The Homes Guarantee campaign, based at People’s Action, organizes with 50+ tenant-led groups across 24 states, currently building a shared practice of tenant unionizing and driving a federal strategy to protect tenants. The campaign is currently focused on regulating rents in federally-backed properties. KC Tenants, founded in 2019, organizes 5,600 tenants and has become one of the most significant political forces in the region. KC Tenants wrote and won a Tenants Bill of Rights in 2019, Tenants Right to Counsel in 2021, and $50 million for truly affordable housing in 2022. The union has organized to remedy poor conditions in apartment buildings, to win restitution for displaced trailer park residents, and to re Tara’s work has been featured recently in the New York Times, CNN, The American Prospect, and Democracy Now! She began organizing in the immigrant rights movement. Tara is an Australian-born, Indian-American immigrant. She grew up in Kansas City, where she lives and organizes now.
